So I’ve been a complete slacker with my blog this summer, but I finally have some wonderful pictures to share. We went for it this year, and put in a HUGE garden. I haven’t measured, but it looks to be about an acre. We struggled with names for the farm, etc, with not much luck. I started referring to the garden as the “Yarden” because it’s bigger than most people’s yards… and “The Yarden” was born.
Here… a picture of my favorite tomatoes in the garden, the Speckled Striped Roma, or Striped Roman as some people call it. I watched and waited for this to turn red from June until now.
The lesson I’m learning though, seems to be patience. I would give everything for one hot Utah summer of tomatoes. We’ve had a hot summer, but it just doesn’t last as long as it does further south, and I’m going to be scrambling to get these ripened before a frost.
Hark! A ripe tomato! Now twenty… uh oh.
I have 250 tomato plants in the ground… Black Krim, Red Zebra, Green Zebra, Aunt Ruby’s German Green, Black Russian Cherries, Speckled Striped Roma, San Marzano, Orange Roma & Green Grape. I love all but the green grape, which I’d never waste soil space on again. Throw the seeds away if you thought about planting it, it’s the ugliest little unhealthy looking plant (and I have 30+, so I think it’s a pretty safe judgment) and the tomatoes take forever to ripen and taste awful.
My sunflowers are starting to bloom, the zinnia’s are gorgeous and my peppers are finally starting to really roll in. Yippee!
