My mommy gave to me ♥
My mom is the most amazing person. Truly. You can ask anyone. She does too much for everyone. She saves my ass so much it’s mortifying. I would be lost without her.
When we were little, she started celebrating the twelve days of Christmas with us. Beginning on the thirteenth of December, you open a present each day until Christmas. It’s a fabulous way to stretch out the holiday season and teach the importance of the thought behind the gift more than the crazy rush of Christmas morning and opening a million insignificant gifts.
My mother is the quintessential perfect woman. She’s kind and patient, funny and accepting. She’s the reason we can exploit our cooking & baking skills to our advantage. She taught us all to garden and can. She’s the reason we’re all so well rounded.
I have absolutely NO Christmas spirit this year. Santa can’t put what I really want under the tree. I have yet to buy a single gift… and my darling child hasn’t even written her letter to Santa. I’m essentially a little fucked in pulling off some miracle this year… or at least I would be… if it weren’t for my mother. I’ve learned from the source of Christmas miracles. I’ve learned from the Angel of the holidays herself.
She left for a vacation last Saturday and dropped off the bags of presents. She’ does the twelve days of Christmas for my sister and I, my kids, my ex’s kids, a few friends, etc… she’s amazing like that…
I’m sharing mine with you in hopes I can kick my Christmas spirit at least into first gear. The longer I wait to face the inevitable holiday, the worse it’s going to be.
Sooo….
On the first day of Christmas, with a little clue that says “Clean up!”… and it’s a cute little snowman soap
Followed by a cute little red and pink polka dot money/cigarette case that specifically says “For money ONLY” on the little clue…
Not to be outdone, on the third day of Christmas my mother bought me my very own Saint Martha, who is the Patron saint of waiters and waitresses. My dear mother says “Make a million!” every time I get off the phone with her on my way into work or as I’m dropping my little dolly off. The clue on this present said the same. I might have to carry her around with me for a while to see how well she works
Hmmm… followed by a fantastic smoky eyeshadow kit. Mmm. I never knew I’d like blue sparkly eyeshadow so much- I may even try to pull it off for work today.
Little things that mean so much. Simple treats that remind you that it doesn’t matter how much you spend- it matters that you listened, that they’re given with love, and that the real idea behind Christmas is just that- loving each other and giving what you can with the intention to celebrate the holiday, not the retail industry.
I love my mom… and I may actually break down and buy a gift today…proof that the magic of Christmas is as contagious as my cough.
♥
