Chicken Tractors

I want one! Here is the design I’m planning to build:

Deluxe Chicken TractorCourtesy of the Deliberate Agrarian my favorite design so far.

With the ability to grow 40 meat chickens in one, and 30 or so egg layers in another possibly larger chicken tractor, I’ll be able to add eggs to our CSA baskets this year and eat homegrown organic chicken all year. Yum.

The biggest benefit (IMO) of the chicken tractor, is not having to shovel the chicken manure out of the chicken coop, with the added bonus of having the ability to offer your little feathered friends all the fresh green grass & bugs they could possibly want or need.ย  The chickens weed and cultivate while fertilizing the soil they’re on, and with the ease of moving them to fresh grass, they’re a veritible fertilizing factory on wheels ๐Ÿ™‚

I can hardly wait for the snow to melt!

Debbie Meyer, of the almighty Green Bags, you are my HERO.

I kid you not, I took pictures of my fruit and vegetables for you all to see…

Then deleted them trying to copy the files to a different card, accidentally chose format… and wiped it completely clean.

Suffice it to say, Ms. Debbie Meyer, that you have saved me untold fortunes by now, and your Green Bags give me endless joy at finding my bananas delicious living outside of the fridge for more than 2 weeks!

Tomatoes: not even wrinkly after 2 weeks in a green bag hanging in my stainless steel basket by the sink. Literally delicious and as fresh as if I’d just picked them off the plant.

Celery crisp and strong after a month, carrots just the same. Lemons 2 months old, ginger also, as well as 4 month old fresh garlic! I’m a convert, I am a believer, I am sold!

All you who love me and know I love you, run to the store or order them online. Then every time you marvel at your beautiful fresh produce that you worked so hard to afford, remember me, and how much I love you, and how I shared the marvelous miracle of the Green Bag, with you ๐Ÿ™‚

XOXO Jen

43ย Reasonsโ€ฆ

I love him for so many reasons, and being that it was his birthday, I’d like to name a few…

He loves anything and everything I cook/bake for him, including his birthday cake. I found the recipe for it on RecipeZaar, (if you haven’t heard of it, go check it out! They’re credited for leading us to our favorite Creamy Burrito Casserole recipe too, another huge hit!)

He shovels topless… and… as long as I don’t have to join in, I’m a huge fan.

He dressed up with me for Halloween…which meant he wore the not-so-cute-matching-outfit to my cute one, without complaint. Unfortunately he took a liking to his woodsman pants so I’ve had to see the green wool wonders more than I would have liked ๐Ÿ™‚

He made the most beautiful garden for me, out of a Tansy field. If that isn’t love, I don’t know what is. Also, when I told him I really wanted the second half to be round…

He didn’t even argue with me, he just kept on tilling and still tells everyone it was his favorite part of the garden.

He plays catch with the boys, and has taught my son how to throw a football. He reminds us to play.

He loves me completely. Better than that, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and remembers to make me play if I’ve been working too much. I’m running out of pictures but not reasons…

  • He makes me a latte every morning, usually before I drive Little Red to school
  • He does ALL the snow shoveling, including 4 roofs this winter
  • He does more than his fair share of dishes.
  • He watches football with me on Sunday and still explains it to me… even though he has a million times already.
  • He loves my kids… and he shares his son with me too.
  • He puts up with my crafty ADHD… my knitting… my yarn…my fabric…umm… etc…
  • He puts up with me.
  • He lets me spoil my dog… and doesn’t mind if she sleeps in our bed.
  • He’s comfortable with my ex-husband being included in every holiday, and is always welcoming.
  • He supports me being self-employed, even though it’s stressful lately and money is so tight, he never tells me I can’t do something I really hope I’m able to do.
  • He listens to me gripe about my family, my friends’ boyfriend, etc, and even pretends to be interested.
  • He’s honest andย  funny.

He drives me just crazy enough to make it fun, which is why this blog will come in handy some day when I want to strangle him for not putting the cereal away nicely ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Birthday Honey ๐Ÿ™‚

My Koolhaas success!

It’s working!

Truly. I have to say, when I knit this pattern again I will never use variegated yarn again. There’s a shorter (someone who gave up on this workout-of-a-knitted-hat-pattern on ravelry called Jesse’s Christmas Hat )version that is really quite cute and I’ve just begun making one into a baby hat for my sweet Sammy.

This hat is so lovingly made and it was such a struggle at times, but so rewarding, and so relaxing in my currently stressful & chaotic work environment. What on earth would we all do without knitting?

My Koolhaas hat…the bane of my knitting existence.

I’m in love with this gorgeous hat. This is Jared Flood’s Koolhaas hat pattern, inspired by architect Rem Koolhaas’s Seattle Library.

However… after pulling it apart three times, I’m finally just past the first cable set… with 4 more to go. I found the most exquisite emerald green Noro Cash Iroha (Silk, Cashmere, Lambswool & Nylon) but it’s sort of holey and not really defined enough for what I had envisioned. This pattern is work…not an easy and relaxing knit (for me) but I want it… dangit… and I’ve got to have it.

Perhaps new yarn? Smaller needles? Argh. I’m so close to just pulling it out and finding a new pattern… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

My children have cheered me on along the way… and since I’m a die-hard and simply cannot just QUIT… I have to finish it… but I’m dreading the next 4 repeats considering I’m already not really happy with how it’s looking… too smooshy and open, with too much along the lines of holes for cold air to get in… Help. Sigh. Whine.
